If I were asked to write a story about what I did on my Thanksgiving vacation and that story had to include pictures, I'd say, "Yer lookin at it bub!" I made a quilt - my 2nd ever quilt - and a twin-sized quilt, at that. Talk about voluminous, talk about rearranging my studio to maneuver all that fabric, talk about new ways to experience stress, talk about a huge, huge reward when it's all done!!! (I can't show anymore of it b/c I overnighted it to a mag & hopefully we'll be seeing it in a glossy in early Spring! Perfect timing for the January release date for Shades of Grey!)
About the binding
On my last quilt, I opted not to do a traditional binding mainly b/c I was panic-stricken about it. I was afraid I'd royally ruin the whole thing and, b/c I needed it for Quilt Market, I came up with an alternative finishing method within my skillset. As well as I can describe it: I didn't quilt all the way to the edges, which allowed me to turn under about 1/2" of the front & back panels and do a scant topstitch to seal the quilt up. Like a french seam, I guess. To be honest, I don't care for the look of binding - at least that's what I thought until today!
Last night, I tweeted something about 'creative quilt binding' and Jessie from Designs by Jessie commented on how she really liked the look of stripes on a quilt binding. Hmmm. I thought about it for a second, envisioning the Pinstripe design from Shades of Grey around the edge of this quilt! Perfect idea!!! Thank you, Jessie - I'm so, so pleased with how it turned out! (What'd I say about not liking quilt binding?)
Machine binding wasn't that hard either....certainly not something to hyperventilate about. I'm actually looking forward to taking on another one!!
I followed the binding tutorial from Red Pepper Quilts; she has a few other links within her post that were equally helpful.
