happy mother's day!

Mom_ballerinaHappy Mother's Day! Were it not for this cute young woman pictured here - my mom - I would not have had the chutzpah, interest or skill to be doing what I'm doing today. She was ALWAYS going to the fabric shop, which meant we were always going, too. My favorite spot would be the curtain tassle rack. I would hold them upside down and pretend they were muppets - near.....far.....near......far. Good times!

My mom made my sister and I shirts with appliques, furry bean bag chairs and matching puppy puppets, schoolbags with silhouettes and monograms, halter tops and prom dresses...the list goes on and on! She took cake decorating and ceramics classes, too! She was (and is) very creative, and I'm soooo lucky to have had her example. She is not only extremely talented, but she isn't afraid to experiment, learn something new, or take a tip from a good friend - these 3 things are what I cherish most about my mom. They serve me well in the context of my business and in all of life: experiment, learn & listen. Thank you, Mom - even though I picked all of this up a little late in life, it still got through!

look what Peanut Man whittled up for me

WhittlingSee that little broken, brambly wooden stick on the bottom of each pic? That's my prized point turner. My mom gave it to me a few years ago when she was purging some sewing supplies, and I've grown quite attached to it. It's an unassuming overachiever - no other point turner has worked better for me. Anyway, it cracked in half when I walked on it one time (what? don't you keep yours on the floor?!), and then it's been broken another time or two. Now there's not enough of a grip left to hold onto it. And along came this whittler...

I found 2 chunky sticks on our hike this morning, showed him the point turner and he went to town! Not a bad job at all! I will have to sand them a little bit, but otherwise they're perfect!

toot sweet

Icecreammyohmyohmyohmy, the menfolk in the house ventured to the interior of the grocery store...and this is what they returned with. It was soooo good for about the first 5 little bites, then the sweet-sweet-sweetness took over. That will last me until this summer's trip to the boardwalk fer shur.

things, they are a-bloomin'

Today was a glorious day! Fun to get a taste of summer in the middle of April, tho we are in need of some April showers. Lots of pretty things are in bloom in our yard - makes so happy to see these beautiful colors.
AzaleaAzaleas that anchor the steps coming off our front porch.

ForsythiaForsythia that borders the west side of the porch. They were just teensy buds on March 17th.

RedtreeMan oh man, I cannot remember the name of this tree! I'll have to see if I saved its info tag from last year. 2 of these anchor each of the corners of the porch - they're about the 4th plant I've tried there. The scale and color contrast should work this time!

PeriwinklePeriwinkle that's here and there. The former owner of our house had kind of English garden thing going. It was pretty, but it was soooo overgrown. The whole frontyard was periwinkle with a slate path. My sister helped me rip it all out when we moved in 5 years ago. We planted grass and reused the slate to make a backyard patio. Much better to have grass when kids are running wild in the neighborhood!

I'll be taking many more up-close images as summer progresses. I want to do more drawing and nature studies from my own images. I'll also be able to use these in some future fabric designs, too. I wonder when I see all the botanical silhouettes that are so popular right now, if they're handdrawn or taken from personal photos or just stock photos? What do you think? I know there are a lot of free brushes for Illustrator out there, too. I wonder how many are using these or are creating their own from scratch. I personally think stock photos and free brushes are akin to cheating, but that's just me. Do you have an opinion? I would love to hear it!

field trip

Hawkmtn_vistaPeanut Man had an inservice day today, and I happily, cheerfully, gladly took the day off from my professional, dress-up gig. My officemate asked me earlier this week if I thought about all the "fun" they had in the afternoons after I left (I work til 12:30) - I said, "Not even for a second." They are fabulous co-workers, but my head is just not there when I'm not there.

Back to the field trip ~ I went against my non-pre-pre-pre-planning ways this week: checked the weather 3 days ago, thought of a great idea, invited 2 of PM's friends, wrote down directions, found the binoculars - I felt so organized (I even got out of the house on time this morning - do I get a medal or a monument for that?!). The weather didn't disappoint either at 80 degrees and full sun! We trekked to Hawk Mountain Sanctuary. It's a mountaintop ridge with trail systems and lookouts, where the migratory patterns of raptors are tracked (falcons, eagles, hawks, et al). Here's their mission statement:
The Hawk Mountain's mission is to conserve birds of prey worldwide by providing leadership in raptor conservation science and education, and by maintaining Hawk Mountain Sanctuary as a model observation, research and education facility.
The trail to the farthest lookout point is well-traveled and easy to get to (little rocky b/c it is PA after all). And the boulder fields at the lookout are perfect for perching with your binocs and seeing what there is to see. Sooo scenic as you scan the vista of the Blue Mountains.

To the right of the lookout is another trail system you might have heard of, something called the Appalachian Trail. We've hiked and trail run this section many times, and it takes my breath away everytime. It's tiny compared to other mountains in the US, but we'll take it. We're lucky to have such beautiful, natural places being conserved!

they want you to think they're sleeping

Dogs_2Ha! Do you know what they're reeeeally doing? These 2 innocent-looking goobers (Scout and George, formally*) are actually very busy shedding - with every. fiber. of. their. being. To make sure no surface goes unhaired. And as one of the vacuumers around here, I can vouch for what a spectacular job they're doing! I filled up an entire vacuum bag in one go-around yesterday! Ack!!

They have been banned from the sewing room. Especially that fella on the bottom - his hair loss exceeds all measures of anything remotely normal (as does his personality). What they lack in hair retention they make up for in sweetness, loyalty, companionship, silliness, cuteness and goodness - so we'll keep them around!

*Informally, they are known as MANY other things. Current fave for Scout is La Diabla, and for George, (he'd rather I didn't say).

fruit bars and trail mix bars

FruitsnackFound these scrumptious fruit and granola bars online and thought you might like to know about them! I googled "natural fruit bars," and Kettle Valley came up 1st on the list. They had a super selection of 100% fruit bars - no artificial flavors or preservatives, no added sugar. They all looked and sounded so good - I was a little overwhelmed trying to decide which bar in which flavor! I clicked through to one of their suggested online retailers, everydayfruit.com and found sample packages!! Yay. I ordered the large sample package (21 items for $25.59). Their website also offers natural bars from other companies, and I picked some trail mix bars from HoneyBar that are fantastic!!! Nuts, raisins and honey. Period. 24 bars for $32.95. The HoneyBar website has many, many other yummy, natural bars, with online retailers listed.

We're always on the lookout for the most natural ingredients in our foods, minimizing processed, pre-fab, chemical-laden foods by default. Stick to the perimeter of the grocery store for the least processed foods....if you're in the middle, you're doomed. It really doesn't take much longer to prep a meal from scratch than from a box - try it!

sometimes he's not jumping

SketchbookPeanut Man loves to draw as much as he loves to jump, read and build Legos. His teacher this year lets her students read or draw when they have free time in class. At first, I was a little put off by the idea of kids' drawing over reading, but I think that was my own hang-up b/c that's "the way we did it." I don't know about other people's kids, who might spend too much time in front of the TV and their only reading time is in school. But that doesn't apply to Peanut Man - this guy enjoys reading (one of his Grandmas is a librarian) - he will blow through an entire series in a weekend if allowed.

So, when I weighed the argument for drawing vs. reading, I thought it was great that he got a devoted amount of time at school to draw or doodle whatever he felt like. No art teacher telling him what to do, no homeroom teacher telling him to make a project related to science, no mother telling him to make a birthday card for his cousin....just HIM drawing whatever HE likes. Some of his classmates have started a drawing club where they pick different subject matter and devote entire pages to futuristic monsters or fantastical dragons and make up storylines that bring it all together.

When I saw some of the productions, I immediately went out and bought him a sketch book - not only so there wouldn't be so many pages floating around but also to give him the feel of journaling and a collection of something to look back on when he's older. I've never filled up a sketchbook, but I imagine it's exhilarating. I should do that! In this pic, he's keeping me company as I blog to all of you!!! Yay!

a beautiful Sunday morning

Easter_2 An early morning hike doesn't get much better than this: gorgeous blue sky (my husband's favorite color), crisp, cold air, two dogs running, busy birds chirping, and the 3 musketeers bounding along a lakeside path. We've been doing Sunday morning hikes for about 5 years now - pretty much our version of church. We've never found ourselves more centered, more uplifted or more enlightened than after a walk in Mother Nature's woods. Truly, our hearts and souls are overflowing with a very conscious and contagious joy. Anyone can read from a book on a pulpit, but the awesome beauty and simple complexities of a forest burgeoning with life will re-align your sense of good and righteousness more than any word on a page. Give it a try. Let yourself be humbled by the wonder of it all, and let me know how clear-headed and energetic you feel afterward!

We topped off this hike with a 5-mile run afterward and another walk around the neighborhood later in the evening. It was a day for movin' and groovin'! Hooray for Spring!!!!!!

*This path we're on is a 27-mile loop that goes around the Blue Marsh Lake in Southeastern PA. This is where the Adventure Race was held last September - cannot wait to get out on my mountain bike again!!

sow your own luck

CloverplantingSaturday was sooo pretty here - we were outside all the live long day! Peanut Man rec'd a clover seed kit from my in-laws and a-plantin' he did go! We have some bunnies who live under our fence - maybe they'll get 'lucky' with this clover patch even if we don't!

Got started on little Spring clean-up, too. Raked all the twigs and a lot of wind-blown leaves, tho I'm sure there will be more. See the little buds on this forsythia? Yay!! And do you have any idea what that pile of slag could be on the right? Why, it's our jack-o-lantern from Halloween of course! Don't even ask...unless the question is: "How do you start an accidental pumpkin patch?" Thar she blows!Bloomsandroots

regular old week

ClockThis year daylight savings was a delightful surprise. As I sat in my sewing room on Sunday, thinking of what I was going to get accomplished with one less hour (as if!), this cute little clock caught my eye. I was so psyched to realize I had made it an entire span of DLS (from Fall-back last year til now) without changing it! Ultimate procrastination. Niiiiiice.

I am always scrambling to squeeze more out of a day, and I finally came to terms with a few things this week: quality is missing in certain critical places. I don't spend nearly enough quality time with the Peanut Man and my husband, and I don't get nearly enough quality sleep each day. Both leave me ragged and heavy-feeling - one b/c of the mental toll (guilt, anxiety, disconnectedness) and the other b/c of the physiological toll. I changed these things around these week big time. Nobody's getting any younger! Total energy renewal!! Moreso than anything, being with the 2 most important people in my life, hanging out and laughing with abandon, has been incredibly medicinal. It has made all the difference in what I can get done in an hour - the clear-headedness and energy just keep coming!

FlowerdoodleDid some doodling this week, too. Nothing big. Just putting the pencil in my hand felt great. Too computer-y all the time. Ick. Have to get my mind's eye and my hand to re-connect. Thinking of taking a drawing class this Spring - for the heck of it.

Spring Break is coming next week, and I took the whole week off from work to get my samples sewn. But, big but, my sewing machine is in the shop! The guy knows I use it for business, so he said he'd bump me up. Sometimes I think he has those work orders staged for people to see how "busy" he is - I don't know....I hope he really is that busy, but I do wonder. I've been procuring raw mats whilst I wait: zipper tape, lining fabric, duck cloth, thread, canvas. Thinking about a hand press. I get so overwhelmed when I look at the dies and and grommet sizes. I know I've thought many times, "If only I had a grommet press..." and then I scratch whatever design I was thinking of. Speaking of designs, working on some new ones. Can't stand those boxy, rigid bucket totes anymore. Blech. Here's a tiny glimpse at a new one:
Baguettesample_2Sort of like a baguette shape. Pay no mind to the fabric or thread - these aren't good and they're not here to stay. This was rendition #4. I installed a recessed zipper, and since I don't work from patterns, it was  a challenge to get it to both look good and function. The first 2 just kept pulling up the fabric each time I would tug on the zipper slider. No good. I love this bag style lots, lots, lots, so we'll have a meeting of the minds when my machine gets back.

Does anyone watch Lost????? How about the episode tonight about Jin and Sun? Wow - a complete mouth-dropper!! For the record, it is possible to be bawl and have your mouth agape at the same time. Doesn't look so swell, but it can be done if you need to know.

moonshoe walk

MoonwalkYou may remember that Peanut Man likes to jump, to put it mildly. He asked for a trampoline for Christmas - we opted for moon shoes and a pogo stick. What a great investment! Kids are not outside playing and romping as much as they should be - fun, simple outdoor options that get them moving are primo.

We were going for a brisk after-dinner walk tonight (yay daylight savings), and he exclaimed, "I'm wearin' my moon shoes!" He made it about 2/3 of a mile, bouncing, boinging and jumping down the sidewalk. Only one small spill. Even tho we knew we'd have to carry them later (when he got pooped), it was totally worth it to let him bound like kangaroo rather than squash his spark.

MoonjumpThe expression on his face in the last pic says it all.

from a simple sketch

KateanddoodleEvery Friday at 10am, I'm sitting in a Marketing meeting for my dayjob. I perform such a specific set of tasks that most of the meeting borders on the immaterial, except to fill in the strategic foundation for why I'm doing what I'm doing (actually that does sound sort of important). No matter, I doodle like mad anyway! I try to keep one ear open so my mind doesn't wander too far into The Land of Fabric Design Possibilities. A major challenge fer shur.

I've transformed a few of the Peanut Man's works of art into fabric designs and other fun things, too. Nobody is above the law in my house! I'll share some of those things in the coming weeks.

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

cookie truck foiled our Florida trip

Harrisburg_2I kid you not when I tell you that an overturned cookie truck on Thursday afternoon caused a 13-mile backup to the Philadelphia airport - in turn causing us to miss our flight. The airline was already overbooked on every flight to Orlando and Tampa, so we couldn't confirm seats on another flight. All they could offer was stand-by for any flight over the next 3 days. No thank you. The funny party was every other person missed their flight, yet the customer service rep at the US Airways counter feigned ignorance when we told her why we missed ours. Seriously.

Since my in-laws were graciously taking care of our dogs, we opted for a quick trip to Harrisburg PA. We went to The National Civil War Museum the first day. Having lived in Gettysburg PA until I was 10, I spent a lot of time at the Battlefield. What I knew from that experience was a sliver of what I learned while at this museum. So much was lost, yet so much was won. History books really gloss over the number and magnitude of each battle, choosing to highlight pivotal battles instead. I was aghast. Left me sort of off-kilter. The next day, we went to the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts. Lots of hands-on, 3-D exhibits...tons of fun! We also saw an IMAX called "Australia" - absolutely breathtaking and awe-inspiring. A very educational trip all around! Glad we could go, but I still would have opted for Florida!

mini-vacation

FloridaWe're heading to the Sunshine State to visit my parents tomorrow. Cannot wait!! The weather is supposed to be glorious, and I'm ready for some sun and warmth! No make-up, no business-professional clothing, no computer! I feel my neck loosening as I speak. Short and sweet tho - we'll be back on Monday. Don't get too crazy while I'm gone!

PogoSuch is life, yes? Which is which has a lot to do with your perspective. This Bugger's up to 500+ jumps in a row. He doesn't count when the pogo hits the ground - he counts when he's in the air.

Does perspective matter?

Always.

giant paper mache creature

GiantpapermachePeanut Man is taking an art class where the students make (any guesses?)....giant paper mache creatures! He opted for a dragon that's about 6 ft. long with a wing span of about 5 ft. I think we're lucky the wings aren't to scale, and that they're currently detachable. Getting it home in our fuel-efficient car should be interesting. Big dragons, big messy hands and big yawns. A perfect evening!

His instructor is a very energetic and talented full-time artist. See his work here. Striking moments of nature captured on canvas. Love the Magnolia studies. Our small city is quickly becoming known for its art scene, and I hope that will continue into the unforeseen future...it can only be a good thing as far as I'm concerned!

any resemblance?

PrincessleiaWhile making breakfast one day last week, I heard the Peanut Man and George romping and wrestling in the dining room. Then I hear nothing but the Peanut Man laughing hysterically, to the point where he's barely taking a breath. And that makes me laugh, even tho I have no clue what's taken place in the next room. He's yelling, "Mom, mom, you have to see this! [laughing, breath, laughing, tears streaming] George looks just like Princess Leia!" [more laughter, less breathing] So I go check it out, and sure enough the big galoot is sporting 2 flipped-inside-out ears that bear a striking resemblance to the good princess. Better still, he's just sitting there looking at us, waiting in a wired-up but confused state, wondering what the big whoop is, "Nothing to see here folks, let's get a move on, grab a toy, c'mon now, we're still playin'!" As we're making up what he's thinking, he gets up and starts tearing around the house at 50 mph, no brakes...and the harder we laugh, the faster he goes! A look-alike contest gone haywire for sure!!

celebrate good times, c'mon

50thanniversary_2My aunt and uncle celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this past weekend by renewing their wedding vows. It was very sweet - you could tell the sentiment meant so much to them. Matt & I (pictured here doing 2 very different versions of the same dance) were very moved by the whole occasion. We've been married for almost 14 years, been a couple for 21 years and known one another for about 25. Still a long way to 50 years!! But, holy cow, I feel so lucky every day that I wake up next to this man! And I strive to be the kind of person that makes him feel the same way. It's all good!

The evening brought together a lot of cousins, grandchildren and great-granchildren - and siblings- who haven' t seen each other in many years. And we danced our butts off in true celebratory fashion! Even the Peanut Man (in the middle) got in on the action with 2 of his cousins to learn a line dance - I think this was the Electric Slide or Soldier Boy. They were all so silly! (Believe it or not, I had never, ever done the Electric Slide before this weekend. I think I was the only one in the room!)

My beautiful sister Linda was movin' and groovin' with my older brother Michael in this picture - I'm sure she was dizzy from all the spinning (or maybe the wine). A lady I didn't know stepped on my foot with her high-heeled boots twice in the same spot- yowsa! Just realized how black and blue it was today!

January 15, 2008

got knots?

Gotknots
In my zeal to catapult, I somehow managed to take on too many things at once - as if! And of course, some of them happen to be not only extremely important to my business but also include deadlines - double as if! Couple that stress with a 30-ft. rope climb at my workout class, my doomed-to-suffer neck trigger points and one *powerful* sneeze...and you have a recipe for disaster. I feel like I have a hot poker stuck in my trapezoid that goes halfway down my back. Oy vey! I went to my chiropractor, and he was able to relieve a good bit of the pain so at least I can lift my arms and turn my head (to see that all this work lies before me).

**None of these pics are me...not the cartoon man, not the wooden "knot" egg, not the superball and not the lady leaning on the superball. (The cartoon man is close, what with all that bright red pain he's dealing with.) I am going to try the superball technique tho. I also deal with piriformis syndrome (a pain in my a$$, literally), and I'll never stop working out long enough to get complete relief so I use the tennis ball technique about once a week. You sit on a tennis ball - find the trouble spot and hold it there for about 15-20 seconds. It releases all the toxins, and it really, really works!! I read about it here.

Hopefully I'll be back with some more regular posting here and on Scoutie Girl soon enough!

do you catapult?

Winter2007_2
I catapult. By that, I mean once Christmas is over, I am in a full-speed ahead, get-out-of-my-way clamor to get the decorations down and put away; to get closets, drawers and shelves re-organized; to get rooms rearranged; and to get all outgrown, unwanted & unnecessary items (read: clutter) purged (donated or thrown away). It's not that I don't love the sights and sounds of Christmas, but by Dec. 26th, I've already enjoyed it for a month - a pretty large 'seam allowance'. After the Magical Date, the decorations are dead weight that hold me back. And once they're put away, it's apparent how much of "regular life" has been neglected. I think my frantic 'move or be moved' mode is like a feng shui tornado, and when the dust settles, it's all good baby. So, Christmas, I love ya...but please don't let the door hit you on your way out. In our house, the spirit of Christmas is felt the whole year-through, as it should be, and I'll have these tiny memories to look back on. I'm excited for a big year of big changes, both personal and business-related...so let's get going!!! Happy [belated] New Year! All the best to you!

all for one little squeaker

Georgetoy1
George, George, George! What are you doing?!

I have a very serious love-hate relationship with dog toys. I know they need things to chew, play with and possess. But the mess that it leaves behind as they rip out the fluffy entrails is so distressing (get some perspective, I know). How do they even get their big faces and jowls in those tiny holes to pull it all out?! I admire the mastery but still wish they would clean up after themselves!

Georgetoy3
I'm going to start saving the fluff and re-using it in new toys. I'll just sew squares of felt and stuff them chock full. And look, here are some replacement squeakers from an ebay seller, Chatsco Distributions. The page that loads when you first go to their site is a listing for animal toy eyes...totally creepy.

*George is NOT named after any current or former Presidents.

the value of a tree

Cherrytree
Today is a not-so-nice day in southeastern PA. We're being deluged with a messy, wintry mix of wetness. Nothing compared to the icestorm other parts of the country just got hit with, but in any storm of extremes, I am always very concerned about this gargantuan cherry tree in our backyard. It's more than 100 years old, leftover from when our neighborhood was an orchard. We've had it pruned and checked a few times, and it was deemed healthy. From the sheer weight of the tree, one heavy icestorm or one well-placed crack of lightning - and it would be over. I paste my face to the window during thunderstorms just to give my family an extra split-second to get out the door. So, why don't we cut it down? We've thought about it and have had offers to mill it for the cherry wood for a lot of $$$. But, it still bears fruit (no kidding!) that the local wildlife count on...it's home, hideout and interstate to more species of birds and silly squirrels than I care to count...its beautiful above-ground roots at its base form a U-shape that makes a nice sandbox with built-in stools...its lushness in the summer provides much-needed shade in our old house without air conditioning...so the good outweighs the potential bad, and it doesn't feel right to hack it down like George Washington and then have to make a confession later to Mother Nature for chopping down her cherry tree! Reap what you sow...

bionic man

One of the many, many, many reasons why I'm madly in love with my husband. See tractor-tire-jumping video here. He's in phenomenal shape for a man of almost 38, and he continually pushes himself to the edge - an edge that is always being redefined! He's a super positive influence on us (me and Peanut Man), and we are all better for it! His zest for life is contagious! Thanks W.

words of wisdom - it'll be fine!

Christmascard We were going out for a walk last night, and I thought I'd snap a few pics for our Christmas card before we set-off. Both dogs were told to sit and stay - Scout (on the right - a rescued pooch from WV) will not move a muscle until she is released, ever. She's unbelievably obedient! George (goober on left) just turned 1 in October. He's a rescued pooch from NC, and this is his first real snow (if you can call it that). He was having no parts of sitting and staying - he's very wiggly and lanky and wormy - and strong! He was desperate to bound through the snow - he just kept pulling and snaking backwards to get away. My batteries were dying, and I was a little "excited" as I was telling my son to get him to sit, he kept yelling, "It's okay, Mom! Just take the picture....It'll be fine, Mom! Really, it'll be fine." In that instant, I realized, "He's absolutely, positively right!!" And it's just that sort of wisdom (at 10 yrs old!) that shines through now and again and levels a situation like nothing else can. I'll keep that nugget in my pocket as I stumble through this busy season...it'll be fine! (And I really like this pic b/c that's real life, take it or leave it.) Thanks JD.

my how time flies

20yearpics
My 20-year class reunion was last evening. It was really, really something else to see so many familiar faces (and some unfamiliar)! I think I look pretty much the same even tho I no longer wear a gallon of eyeliner or straighten my hair as if having curly hair was a prison sentence! Despite a few creaks, wrinkles and a good bit of healthy perspective, I feel pretty much the same, too.

My memories from high school are still so vivid and tangible. I've kept in touch with most of my girlfriends - that old saying "friends for a reason, friends for a season, friends for a lifetime" is very true. After 20 years, it's pretty clear who fits where into that scheme. My husband graduated a year behind me, so he wasn't too bored hanging out with some of his old friends, too.

I refused to smile in most of my high school pictures b/c I had braces until the day before graduation. It's a shame b/c I had a ton of things to smile about. And I have a tremendous amount to smile about now, too. Life is good.

back to school, back to work...

Jackanddogs ...and back to routine! Yahooooo!! This big guy will be heading back as king-of-the-hill this year - a big 4th grader! I don't know how that happened. I must have looked away briefly while he aged 9 years. Oh my.

I love the Fall b/c to me it signifies the real beginning of the year. January 1st doesn't hold a candle to the start of Autumn. New outlooks, new goals, new energy...s'all good!

But then I look at what I've neglected for the past 3 mos, and that frightens me! Can you see it, too? What in the world is that? I have my work cut out for me literally and figuratively! I best get to it. So check in again when you have a chance.
