I've been tagged (deja vu)

I was tagged by Kelly from Happy Shack Designs, and here are the rules I’m supposed to follow: link back to the person that tagged you, post these rules on your blog, share six five unimportant things about yourself, tag six three people at the end of your entry. (I prefer odd to even so I'm changing it to five! Hey-THAT was an unimporant thing right there!)

Jan_3rdrgrade_3So here goes nothin' -
1. The year this pic was taken (3rd grade), I won a pack of Bubble Yum every Friday in school b/c I was always in 1st place in a spelling contest.
2. When I was 11, I broke my leg falling out of a tree.
3. I thought I would be an Olympic sprinter or a zoologist when I grew up.
4. I can bar hang for more than 2 minutes (lookout Presidential Physical Fitness).
5. I carry Dentyne and chapstick everywhere I go. Here are my 3 taggees:

green chic book review

Greenchic_book_2Had the privilege of reading and writing a review for the book pictured here, Green Chic - Saving the Earth in Style. I posted it on my other blog, Scoutie Girl, in case you haven't ventured over there. I'll be featuring earth-friendly goods over there all week in recognition of Earth Day today.

pick your product, pick your descriptor

Hairproducts17 hair products! 17. And every single one dashed my hopes of having lustrous, bouncy, natural curls. Not all at once; these were purchased over a period of about 3 years. But, ever the optimist, I bought each one, thinking it would bring me the curls of my dreams. If you have curly hair, you know the constant battle with frizz! And you could probably match these descriptors to each product with your eyes closed: too gooey, too crunchy, too greasy, too sticky, too much hold, not enough hold, too drying, too ____________ (I'm sure there are others I'm missing). I've tried each one more than once in different weather conditions to make sure my assessments were correct, and that's why they're still here - I thought maybe I'd try them again. But it's not to be - today's the day we part ways. Bye-bye hair products. I had big plans for us, but you're not holding up your end of the bargain so I'll have to move-on without you....all the best...........

the bad jellybean lesson

JellybeanThere was a definite skew toward the "off" flavors in this jellybean bag (by off, I mean green apple, peach and strawberry). So we made pictures instead.

The jellybean fiesta was going on at the same time a new cinnamon candle was burning - it was the worst fake perfumey-musky-spicy smell ever! Our smell-taste senses were thrown out of whack with the olfactory overload of candle musk and fake fruit. We all started to feel sick, and the jellybeans and candles had to be tossed out.

Sad and stupid. These items were an impulse purchase. What a waste of our hard-earned cash. And the overconsumption / "throw-out-society" feeling of it made me more sick than the smell! Matt and I shook then & there on reminding one another not to be so impulsive. Truly, it doesn't happen very often, but it shouldn't happen at all. There's just no need.

love this re-do on a re-do book

Diy_sewingbookSaw this cute idea posted on Craft magazine's blog today - which was pulled from the blog of elsie marley.

It grabbed me immediately b/c this EXACT book was a staple for my Dad when I was growing up. Left to my own devices, I never would have stumbled over the brain cell that stores this nugget of info - without an image prompt first.

I think this book was given to me as a hand-me-down a few years ago, too, but I have no clue what I did with it. I may have to go digging now! The binding is certainly thick enough to house all these sewing tools and notions!

very, very miscellaneous

[what follows is not blog decorum, but I know you'll all understand :) ]

To my sister and/or best friend:

I have a small request - if something terrible should befall my health and I become comatose (knock on wood), please pluck my eyebrows. My husband and son will not recognize me if they are allowed to fill-in to their natural state. Maybe you can flip for it. Certainly, I would do the same for you.

I've been tagged

I've been tagged by rifferaff from Make It, so now I will list seven things about myself and tag a few other bloggers to do the same:

  1. I am the youngest of 4 in my family. While we are all in different industries, we all (parents included) have very conceptually creative brains that we can never turn off. Now that I'm older, I have such an appreciation for growing up in a house where my mom was extremely crafty as a seamstress-cake-decorator-ceramist and where my dad's DIY was the modus operandi. I have pics of us taking turns using a sledgehammer to knock-out a wall.
  2. I'm married to a man who let me know he "liked" me by putting a secret-admirer Valentine's card in my family's newspaper when I was 18 (20 years ago).
  3. I routinely broke my mom's Bernina in high school so I could "peg" my jeans. Didn't know much about sewing, let alone sewing denim! My first sewing machine was a Kenmore hand-me-down from my grandma. The bobbin-winder didn't work so I would wind bobbins by hand with the bobbin on a pencil...wreaked havoc on the tension, but I was determined.
  4. I cannot remember a time when there wasn't a rescued dog in my home, from childhood through college until now. Most of my friends / family are dog people, too (including in-laws). Coincidence?
  5. In 9th grade, I was voted 'funniest girl' by my classmates (why not "most likely to succeed" I wonder? Hmmmph).
  6. In my late 20s, I summarized my personality by saying, "What you see is what you get." Now, in my late 30s, I would have to say: "There's much more to me than meets the eye." (Maybe my 40s will be: "Get a good look cuz it's going fast!")
  7. Styrofoam gives me the absolute willies!!!

I will tag: lisa {milkshake}, vanessa c, ninapatina and brassy meg.

the week's miscellany

Covergirl_remover
To the girl in Target who was talking to herself:
Thank you for loudly announcing each of your make-up selections the other day. As I watched you in puzzled amusement, wondering who you imagined your invisible audience to be,  I was glad to hear you say, "Oh yes, and the eye make-up remover is right here. I need one of those." I had been shopping for just that item, and you seemed very confident in your selection. So I bought your brand, and I'm quite happy with it! (Maybe she was doing a Sociology project....)

Question: Do you think candy canes get a bad rap b/c of the taste or b/c the plastic wrap is not only impossible to unwrap but also is ridiculously static-y? Have you ever seen someone unwrap one and casually try to throw away the plastic - never! It always ends in wild finger-flicking and uncontrollable arm-flailing!

I vowed to get more sleep and drink more water in 2008, same as I have vowed every year since my son was born in 1997. Hasn't happened yet. Along with non-static-y wrappers, they ought to make a beer I don't like so I will have time to drink more water (then I'll get to bed earlier, too). Honestly, it's a sliding scale - if there were more hours in a day, I would find reasons to use them. You too?

Have a great weekend!

about

  • Thanks for visiting!! I'm the blood, sweat & tears behind Daisy Janie, my fabric handbag biz. I'm segueing into textile design b/c handbags will soon envelop my home like The Blob. I'll be writing about the textile adventures as I go, and hopefully some other mumbo-jumbo, too. My other blog, Scoutie Girl has become pretty popular and, not wanting to displease the masses, keeping it current keeps me busy! I'm a 38-yr-old mom to a 10-yr-old Peanut Man, wife to Flash, doggie-owner of Scout and George. I like to run, workout, hike, sew, google (is that a hobby?), cook, eat, drink beer, and laugh (a lot).
